Revealed: ATK Mohun Bagan – Most Hyped Naming Rights in Indian Football

The new name of Mohun Bagan and ATK revealed, here’s what you need to know

ATK, champions of the Indian Super League and I-League champions Mohun Bagan are set to be known as ATK Mohun Bagan as per reports. Both the champions have merged and are to be seen on the ISL next season.

A Goal report says the new team has been verified with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the 80 percent owned by ATK’s Sanjiv-Goenka and 20 percent owned by Mohun Bagan’s merged entity would play by the name of ATK Mohun Bagan and has been registered by the name of ATK Mohun Bagan Private Limited with Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

In addition, the report states that the name has been reserved meaning that no other organization can now allocate it, thus opens the way for more formalities to take place.

The merger of two companies was revealed in earlier this year and a lot of speculation about the ISL aspirations of Mohun Bagan came to an end. The Mohun Bagan Athletic Club members, however, will continue to get discounted tickets for all home games, It has been confirmed by the club.

RPSG Group chairman Sanjeev Goenka stated welcoming Mohun Bagan to the group, “RPSG Group which has a 200-year-old legacy is humbled and honoured to welcome Mohun Bagan with folded hands and open arms to the RPSG family.

“RPSG Group is known for acquiring and growing legacies such as the 120-year-old CESC, 150-year-old Spencer’s Retail, and the 100-year-old Saregama. Personally, it’s an emotional reunion for me as my father Late Shri R P Goenka was a member of Mohun Bagan.”

ATK Mohun Bagan Logo And Jersey

The company is yet to give us any hint on the ATK Mohun Bagan jersey and logo. But it is expected that the company will hold a meeting after June 15 as Mohun Bagan has announced that the club will be opened from June 15.

The 80 percent stake that Sanjiv Goenka has bought includes naming rights as well, which means RPSG Group owner and company have to full rights to name the club what they want. Since the merger was announced Mohun Bagan fans have protested it and want the name to remain Mohun Bagan.

But is the Mohun Bagan naming right the only controversy ? naming right debates aren’t new to modern-day Football, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium deal for a record £400 sponsorship deal sparked controversy of whether the financial deal was fair, fans were not too happy either when jibed by rivals United fans.

What does it mean for Mohun Bagan ?

First of all, it has not been confirmed yet if the team will be called ATK Mohun Bagan, the name that has been registered with the ministry is the name of the company which will own the club.

Most of the facilities of Mohun Bagan also includes in the stake which the ATK owners have full control over those facilities too. It will be all up to them to decide what they want to do.

Mohun Bagan fans are also demanding that their players must be part of the new club, but again all the controls are in the hands of ATK owners.

Selling the naming rights with the stake was probably the worst decision by the management which means Mohun Bagan owners have no control over the name of the merged entity.

Now it’s all up to the ATK Mohun Bagan Private Limited to how the team will look like next season.
