AFC and AIFF have officially announced that India is set to host the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022. Earlier news broke out that India submitted a bid to host the event along with some other Asian powerhouses.
India will be hosting AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 for the first time after 43 years, India hosted the event last time in the year 1979. After a meeting of AFC Women’s Football Committee, the decision was taken to give the hosting rights to India.
India To Host AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 First Time Since 1979
Dato Windsor John, General Secretary of AFC sent a letter to the All India Football Federation, “The Committee awarded the hosting rights of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 Finals to the All India Football Federation.”
“I need to thank the Asian Football Confederation for finding us suitable to host the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2022,” Praful Patel, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) president said in reply to AFC.
The last time India hosted the Women’s Asian Cup in 1979, the host nation India finished as the runners-up. The AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 is likely to be held in the 2nd half of the year.
“The tournament will galvanise the aspiring women players and bring in a holistic social revolution as far as women’s football in the country is concerned,” Mr Praful Patel added to his statement.
“I need to thank the Asian Football Confederation for finding us suitable to host the Women’s Asian Cup in 2022,” AIFF President added.
Recently, with the increase of interest in football in India, AFC is keeping a close eye at the development of Indian football. AFC helped out India in creating a future roadmap of Indian football.
The tournament will see expansion for the Women’s Asian Cup in 2022, as the total numbers of participating teams will increase to 12 from previous 8. As the host of the event, the Indian women’s team will directly qualify for the Women’s Asian Cup 2022.
India had hosted AFC U16 Championship in 2016 and the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2017. Also, the country is set to host the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup next year.
Regarding the event, AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said, “The tournament will play a huge role in further popularising women’s football in India. The Women’s Asian Cup 2022 comes on the back of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020, and will help us sustain, and build on the momentum gained.”
