What is actually Capital Cup ? Read This To Know

Capital Cup Football Tournament, so what is this actually ? Football Delhi has made a big decision to revive football in the capital city of the country.

The last team which represented the capital city of India Delhi in a major football league or tournament was Delhi Dynamos. They last played in the Indian Super League in 2018-2019 season.

After that, the team changed it’s base to Odisha, which resulted in the team getting renamed as Odisha FC and has been playing in the Indian Super League since 2019-2020 season.

What Is Capital Cup ?

Capital Cup A New Football Tournament

The Football Delhi executive committee held a meeting on 28th of May and they came to a decision to launch a league-cum-knockout competition called Capital Cup.

The Delhi football association is set to request All India Football Federation (AIFF) regarding the tournament and will ask for a window to hold the tournament.

After the meeting, a basic format for the tournament which has been approved by Football Delhi is that minimum four Indian Super League (ISL) clubs or I-League clubs will be invited to take part in the tournament.

While four clubs from Delhi can take part in the tournament to promote football in Delhi. They will also discuss with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India and State government about the Capital Cup as they aim to make it an annual tournament.

“Through Capital Cup we would like to energise the local football and connect football fans with an inspiring football tournament, where best clubs and players would be seen in action. It is our attempt to add another initiative to make Capital City a vibrant football city.

“Delhi’s Dr Ambedkar Stadium is one Stadium which has seen all the greats in action and the strong legacy of this stadium and city have to be revived with the Capital Cup,” said Shaji Prabhakaran, president of Football Delhi.

Is Capital Cup Even Possible ?

But, is there any window available for the tournament ? most probably the only window is July and August, and considering the current situation, it is very unlikely that the tournament can be possible in this time period.

And as AIFF is also planning Futsal Championship to kick-off the season in September, there no chance that the tournament can be done in September or later.

Here’s What We Think About Capital Cup

To revive football in Delhi, we think this is a great initiative by the Delhi football association to promote football in the city.

But there is a question, is it really possible in this scenario when the coronavirus pandemic is ruling the sports world. Major sports events have been affected by COVID-19.

Well, this will be great considering the Hero Super Cup likely to be not part of the Indian football season as Hero Super Cup might not be held this year.
